Oregon Suzuki Institute: Strings

The Student Institute: Curriculum

Enrollment in the Oregon Suzuki Institute is open to violin, viola, cello, and piano students beyond the Twinkles who have studied Suzuki literature with a Suzuki-trained teacher.

The core curriculum consists of:

  • Daily master class
  • Group class
  • Third Hour class

Daily Master Class

Students are assigned to master classes based on their current Suzuki book/level. Small class sizes ensure that students get individual attention from the teacher. Book 1-3 classes are limited to 4 per class, Book 4-5 have no more than 3 per class, and Book 6 and above have 2 per class. Each student will be expected to perform a polished piece at the first session of the master class. (A polished piece must be performed fluently from memory with correct notes, fingering, dynamics, bowing, and style.)

Group Repertoire Class

Group classes allow students to refine and polish their repertoire in a group setting. Groups are also assigned by level. Lists of the repertoire for group class are published in the brochure for each year of the institute.

The Third Hour

The third hour of the core curriculum will be the student’s choice of Orchestra, Singing, Dalcroze, or Accompanying. Third hour classes are included in the core curriculum to provide fun and meaningful ways to enrich each student’s musicianship.

Enrichment Classes

For an extra fee, students may enroll in up to two enrichment courses of their choice. In addition to all the third hour choices, enrichment classes usually include Arts and Crafts, Bucket Drumming, Introduction to Chamber Music, Introduction to Music Technology, Origami, and Voice Class. Please consult the brochure as these classes can change from year to year. Please note that siblings who are not enrolled in the Institute may register for enrichment classes.

Evening Activities

At the Oregon Suzuki Institute, special performances begin every evening at 7:00 pm. Performances include a student honors recital, a faculty recital, faculty fun/skit night, and student chamber music, piano, and string concerts.

Students under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

The Daily Schedule

Most classes are scheduled between 8:15 am – 3:45 pm. Some Chamber Music ensembles will meet from 4:00 – 4:45 pm. Commuters, please expect a full day’s schedule! Recreation facilities and play areas are available if there are gaps in between classes. Parents and accompanying adults are welcome to observe student classes and and lectures for adults.

Pre-Twinkle/Twinkle Experience for Ages 4 and Above

The Pre-Twinkle Experience is open to students ages 4 and up who have not yet polished Twinkle or have yet to start an instrument. Each student will participate in two hours:

  • Music Literacy: This class teaches rhythm, pulse, dynamics, melodic awareness, memory skills, and preparation for instrument study. Students will sing, use rhythm instruments, and class materials—no instruments from home will be needed.
  • A choice of one of the following:
    • Music and Movement (Dalcroze)
    • Arts and Crafts
